The easiest way to do this would be for the person who the item is assigned to, to book the item out indefinitely then there is no end date and nobody else can book this.
Can you make it so an item which is assigned to somebody is unavailable for anybody else to book out?
Make an item unavailable for others to book in itemit by assigning it to a user and booking it out indefinitely with no end date.
